MOO MOO hong bao 2021 & Blossom Box
Packaging Design
A red envelope or hong bao is a monetary gift given during the Chinese New Year. This project reinterprets the classic hongbao designs in a contemporary style and challenges the visual boundaries and conventions of the “red” envelopes. In addition, a New Year gift box set is also included, which allow customers to feel the atmosphere of the New Year when opening the box. The gift box consists of a set of 5 money packets that comes in different colours, stickers, thank you cards, and gifts too. There was an exploration of printing techniques for this Moo Moo hong bao and the gift box. For example, the material of packaging, the sizes of the packaging and accessories, and the material colours.
The Concept
The Idea Of This Project
In an effort of stripping away as far from the typical classical design that most red packets go for, hong bao is greatly inspired by how modern art has been and can be, increasingly abstract. In this sense, the image of the cow, the zodiac animal of 2021, is influenced by the organic shapes and textures, using basic organic shapes with the combination of simple visual patterns and solid colours to achieve a flat look, showcasing a modernized look that red packets could look like.
The multitude of colours used is curated based on the standard cultural acceptance that red packets, if not being entirely red, should at least fit the mood of the occasion. Despite its diverse colour palette, the colour red is still used to somewhat stay true to the Chinese beliefs and of course, “red” packets.
In addition, the concept of the blossom box is a box of love for ourselves and our loved ones in this season of spring. The blossom box is inspired by the cherry blossom and also represents the season of Spring; hence the colour theme is red & pink.
Role
My Role In This Project
My role in this project from developing the design concept, material sourcing for the packaging to the execution of the final artwork of money packets, stickers, thank-you cards, gift boxes, and the launching post. There are a few media posts for the launching of money packets and blossom gift box are posted on the Ninteeen89 website and Instagram platform.
