The Power of Consumerism

What is The Power of Consumerism? It is about how people have a responsibility to make decisions and take actions that show our values and create the world we want to see. I wanted to share some of the key points from his talk. And how we can start achieving these steps in our lives. He shared the ideas and stories that helped shift my views and gave me new lenses to look through it. His talk was more focused on the power we all have in how we spend our money. The way our thinking has made changes in our lives. He gave us an idea - "every dollar you spend casts a vote for the type of world you want to live in." His talk has made us focus on what we're maintaining with our purchases and it has made us get into the habit of double confirm that our decisions are reflecting our values. We had to consider all our purchases from clothes, cleaning products, to our food, and even our shoes. Then how we have the power to create a truly sustainable world by living our values and becoming a conscious consumer? How spending our money wisely and make a difference? He highlighted four action steps to help us be a changemaker and be the difference.

Here are the ways to implement a way of living into our lives:

Step 1: Define our Values.

  • Before we make a decision, we should probably know what we value supporting.

  • Identify your values and use your values as a filter for all choices/decisions you make.

  • Sit down and really think about our values when the decision we are making is inline.

  • What do you value? Food, education, environment, society, love, and etc.

Step 2: Set an Intention

  • To educate ourselves about our decisions we make and shift our buying habits.

  • We can view it as a practice.

  • Set out with the intention of following our values with our purchases and choices.

Step 3: Create an Awareness

  • Become an aware citizen.

  • Think deeper and research the effects our decisions have.

  • Develop a critical awareness and curiosity about the impact our decisions make on our community, our loves one, and the environment.

  • Look at how we consume things and question our habits from how we use to where we shop.

Step 4: Shift our Habits.

  • Make the world a better place.

  • We must live and commit to everything that we do.

  • To avoid comfort for long- term gain.

  • Choosing personal growth by following our values.

  • To create a better world for the environment, people, and generations to come.

His speech challenges us to shift our minds of thinking and empowers us to make decisions aligned with our values. We have to learn how we spend our money wisely and to be aware of the positive and negative impacts of our decisions. He encouraged us to step into learning and developing awareness regarding our purchases and the businesses that we support. And we need to put our values into everything that we do now.
