Week 2 Progress - Drafting My Statement of Intent

1. What sort of designer/illustrator are you and do you want to become?

At the moment, I would consider myself as a brand designer and content creator as that is what I have mainly focused on during freelance projects. In the future, I would like to become a brand concept and merchandise designer or work as a photographer for a brand/industry I am interested in. Though I also have a dream of designing my brand and products.

2. What ideas are you interested in and why?

I am very much interested in various language groups that are related to the culture. The current state of varieties of Chinese language is what interests me the most towards this topic; the Chinese language is endangered. Malaysia, which dates back to the Chinese people, is widely spoken throughout the generation, while Mandarin has now enjoyed 70 years of required teaching here. Mandarin is the mother tongue of the majority Chinese ethnic group. Today, most Chinese young adults, especially those who live in urban areas, did not learn their true native language as children or less interested in knowing Mandarin, there is only so much we can do as a single human being to help save an ancient language before it disappears forever. Nevertheless, a growing number of people doing many little things will have a great impact on the language culture.

Secondly, different cultures as well as the concept of third culture children (TCK) is another interest of mine. A third culture kid is described as a person who has spent a significant amount of their life in a culture of surrounding outside of their parents’ surroundings. Oftentimes TCKs don’t feel at home when they are back at their native land or don’t feel a level of connection towards the culture, language, or traditions that their parents are used to.

3. What media/approaches do you use/want to use and why?

When researching, I would like to use documentaries and videos to help me understand ideas better and to get the ideas. Additionally, any form of publication is also something I want to use to easily depict ideas and concepts.

4. What sorts of audiences are you hoping to address or work with and why?

I am hoping to work with people of different backgrounds and cultures rather than sticking to a certain demographic to collect a more vast study on my topics.
