What I observe:


1. Selangor Grocer's Guild


The building

  • built 1927

  • a trade association that represents the interests of grocers, retail traders and sundry-shop owners in KL and Selangor.

  • founded by a small group of Cantonese business man

  • three -storey Neo-Classical building, nice art deco architecture

  • with balconies on the upper floor

  • with Chinese characters

  • no longer functioning

More about

  • membership become lesser, only 73 members now

  • the building are now sub-let, become cafe shop now

  • will be given back to the government when is no longer in existence

2. Kedai Runcit - Lim Mesra Trading

  • in Subang Jaya,

  • wholesalers, sale of foodstuff, groceries and household products

  • small scale, with a lot things, little space for walk, no aircon, banyak dusty

  • cheap but uncle (the shop owner) is not friendly

  • Kakak (The staff) all very nice, helpful

  • Sell a lot of local things, Dry foods, ingredients, sauce, daily products

  • customers type: mostly aunties here, young people not so much, other races not so much too

  • Modern day: got touch-go pay, credit & QR pay, cashier, scale weight machine

The unique things

  • The old-school display, price board, old racks

  • uncle and aunty conversation (rojak languages)

  • special item still can found here

  • the customized service - Kakak will help to carry all the stuffs put into the car

  • human warmth, the culture and experiences are different compared to the big stores.




3. Childhood Concept Store @ Shopping Mall

Observe the environment & people

  • childhood themed items, with a lot of local brand products

  • bring me back from the past

  • to explore the snacks and toys on sale here

  • old-school display, snacks are well packed, biscuits bottle & tins, gumball & gashapon machine, childhood beverages, ad more.

  • expensive, not many people will buy, only taking photos

  • overall feels a bit different, not like the old Kedai Runcit







4. Kedai Serbaneka YKM

  • sell some kuihs, daily products, drinks, and plants

  • tidy and old fashioned, little things, dont have so many customers now

  • The owner "Uncle" very friendly

  • located at SS15


5. Kedai Runcit Feng Yi

  • The shop owner is very young, the shop is close to the farm, in Kampung area

  • Small but with a lots of local brand daily products, snacks and drinks

  • Have a pet inside the shop, very kampung style, a lot Malay customers there

  • Products are well-organized, different categories, clean



6. CHAI JOO SENG @ Bangsar


  • Gold, old signage, mix of typography, old advertising signage

  • enjoy to see the details from the outdoors, everything looks disordered

  • a lot of things are hanging it on the board

  • walked around and I saw a Milo tank there! It surprises me!

  • Finally hunted this beauty shop @ bangsar

  • The biscuits are well-packed in plastic and selling it in front the shop
